How is Tensile strength measured?

Tensile strength is measured by the force required to break the material divided by the cross-sectional area of the material. The units of measure for tensile strength are pounds per square inch (psi) or Newtons per square meter.

There are three types of tensile strength tests:

  • Yield strength test: this measures the force required to cause the material to yield, or deform permanently.
  • Ultimate strength test: this measures the force required to break the material.
  • Elongation at break test: this measures the amount the material will stretch before breaking.

Yield strength is measured in a similar manner as ultimate tensile strength, but the sample is deformed until it yields, or permanently changes shape, rather than breaking.

Elongation at break is measured by the amount the material stretches before breaking. This test is performed by first measuring the length of the sample. The sample is then placed in the grips of a tensile testing machine and stretched until it breaks. The change in length of the sample is then divided by the original length of the sample to calculate elongation at break.

Tensile strength is an important property for many materials, especially those used in applications where high forces are present. The tensile strength can be used to design products that are stronger and more resistant to breaking under force.
